How we work

We're known for our grant-giving programme, which provides millions every year to help museums acquire and share works of art, support the professional development of curators, and inspire and engage new audiences.

But our support goes beyond funding. As a champion for the UK's museums and galleries, we advocate for the sector in a number of ways, from lobbying government to running public appeals.

As an independent charity, we receive no government funding and are entirely supported by our members, who buy the National Art Pass, as well as by the generosity of many trusts, foundations and other individuals.

Building collections

To support museums in adding to their collections, we offer grants towards acquisitions and commissions, and help owners and collectors to donate or bequeath works of art.

Reaching audiences

To help museums increase the impact of their collections, we offer funding to support the sharing of works of art as widely as possible through tours, displays and other projects.

Shaping futures

To ensure their work has the biggest possible public impact, we offer funding to museum professionals to help them develop their skills, share expertise and strengthen curatorial leadership.

Making connections

Behind everything we do is a commitment to helping more people see more art. We work to help museums engage more inventively with their audiences, and collaborate more closely with each other.
