The Technical Examination Network is a pilot programme from Art Fund in partnership with the National Gallery, supporting museums to analyse a painting in their collection with access to the technical equipment and expertise of the National Gallery, Courtauld Institute of Art and Hamilton Kerr Institute.

Scientific technology can help deepen our understanding of the UK’s collections – revealing how works of art were made, establishing attributions and uncovering hidden details that bring new stories to light.

Through fully funded opportunities, five museums will analyse paintings in their collections using new non-invasive analytical imaging techniques, such as X-ray fluorescence scanning and hyperspectral imaging, as well as long-established tools such as infrared reflectography, X-radiography and paint sample analysis.

The five museums supported through the Technical Examination Network pilot are:

  • The Barber Institute of Fine Arts (Birmingham)

  • The Bowes Museum (County Durham)

  • Perth Art Gallery (Perth)

  • Victoria Art Gallery (Bath)

  • Williamson Art Gallery (Birkenhead)

Art Fund's Technical Examination Network programme is made possible in partnership with Lempriere Pringle 2015 and Anthony Mould.
