Wildfowl on the Shore: Pintail, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Ruddy Shelduck, Brent and Barnacle Geese
Archibald Thorburn, 1905

Thorburn moved to the village of Hascombe, near Godalming, in 1902. Every morning, he would take a walk with his sketchbook into the local countryside, which includes woodland as well as ponds, lakes and marshy areas. This watercolour is typical of his work for the accuracy of the birds, directly and unsentimentally observed, and the careful representation of their habitat - a typical, parallel understanding.
