Located in the oldest medieval house in the town, Godalming Museum focusses on local history and tells the story of the surrounding Surrey area.

The museum’s diverse collection encompasses a wide range of artefacts. Delve into the Living Landscape Gallery to discover fossils, archaeological finds from the Roman and Saxon eras, and learn about the area's geological history.

Local heroes

In the People's Gallery, meet over 300 local characters through portraits and stories, gaining a glimpse into the lives of everyday people who shaped Godalming, including Jack Phillips, a young telegrapher on the RMS Titanic. You can even nominate new people to Godalming’s own ‘Hall of Fame’. The museum also features a Victorian Kitchen, offering a glimpse into domestic life from bygone eras.

A stitch in time

Godalming’s association with the woollen industry dates back to medieval times with the last knitting factory closing in 1990. This gallery features framework knitting machines from the town’s Victorian and 20th century knitwear companies including Allen & Solly, Pitchers’, Paine’s and Jaeger.

Art and Crafts

In the later 19th century west Surrey was home to a collection of extraordinary artists and writers. The Arts & Crafts Gallery looks at the work of gardener and craftswoman Gertrude Jekyll and architect Edwin Lutyens, and artists Myles Birket Foster and Helen Allingham. The gallery includes a suffrage banner designed by Jekyll herself.

Events and exhibitions

The museum hosts an array of temporary exhibitions relating to the local area and beyond, plus creative clubs and coffee mornings.
