Untitled (for MOCA)
Robert Gober, 1997
This is a double sided print and illustrates the development of the American artist Gober's process using some of his most persistent visual motifs namely: drainpipe, Madonna, body and dead tree. On each side, Gober has presented an image that is embedded into a page from the newspaper. On the face of it they appear unrelated however the strength of this work derives from the realisation that the two halves of the diptych are not purely opposites; they have something forcefully compelling to do with each other and refuse to stay separate. Gober's haunting art is characterised by enigmatic dualismÂ’s that weave together themes of childhood, sexuality, memory, loss, and spiritual redemption. Presented by the Art Fund through Art Fund International.
