Toussaint L'Ouverture

Lubaina Himid, 1987

Toussaint L'Ouverture is a collage portrait of the Haitian soldier and revolutionary leader Fran'ois-Dominique Toussaint L'Ouverture (1743-1803). The image is inspired by a number of portraits of the soldier, who is shown here in military dress. He is a key figure in black history (he gained freedom from slavery and was instrumental in the Haitian independence movement), and yet has been marginalised in mainstream history. Among the collaged materials in the portrait are article fragments detailing the negative experiences of black people in Britain in the 1980s. ANNUAL REPORT 2019
