The Resolution in a Stream of Pack-Ice
William Hodges, 1772–1773

William Hodges was the official artist on Captain CookÂ’s Second Voyage and this small sketch was made during one of the two sweeps towards the South Pole in 1772-73. It depicts the Resolution under sail in a choppy sea under overcast skies with streams of pack ice floating past. There is a similar sketch in the Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales.
