Sweatopia (The Cry of the Gland II)
Jitish Kallat, 2010

Jitish Kallat has an international reputation as one of the most important contemporary Indian artists. The main theme and inspiration for his work has been the street life of his native city, Mumbai. In this large work, a group of nine male figures confront the viewer. Their heads are composed of auto parts, road maps, fragmented human figures and piled up motor vehicles. Amongst the figures are representations of human anatomy, tormented sections of muscle and bone. The dark patches spreading from the carcasses like patches of oil are composed of silhouettes of the Mumbai skyline. Kallat portrays the city as a living, tormented organism with no distinction between the human and mechanical. This work was presented by the Art Fund through Art Fund International and fits in with the central collecting theme of the social and physical landscape of the modern metropolis.
