Study for the Portrait of Ann Ford

Thomas Gainsborough, c. 1760

This full length portrait was painted specifically to hang in Gainsborough's show rooms in Bath to advertise his special abilities. He chose a pose for Miss Ford which would exploit his skill in painting the satin of the ivory silk sacque dress. Miss Ann Ford was a controversial figure in Bath society at the time.
