Art Funded by you

Preparation

Dame Barbara Hepworth, 1947

© Bowness, Hepworth Estate & Exeter City Museums & Art Gallery

Hepworth worked on a series of drawings of surgeons at work inspired by her visits to operating theatres in Exeter and London.

Depicted as a weighty and monumental figure, rendered anonymous by the medical mask, the surgeon contemplates the impending operation, his hands meeting as he mentally prepares them for action.
