Portrait of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk

Unknown artist, 1565

Three-quarter length portrait of Thomas Howard (1538 - 1572), aged around 27 and wearing the badge of the Order of the Garter. Thomas Howard was a kinsman of Queen Elizabeth and his pro-Catholic interests meant he became the focus of dissent and plots involving a planned marriage to Mary Queen of Scots. As a result, he was executed for treason in 1572.
