This miniature portrait of Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester (1532-1588) was painted in 1576, when he was at the height of his power as Queen Elizabeth's favourite and her Master of the Horse. The year before, Leicester had staged magnificent fetes at Kenilworth in the Queen's honour. Throughout his career, Leicester and his circle remained as one of the mainstays of Hilliard's clientele.
