Portrait of Robert Adam

Sir Henry Raeburn, 1756–1823

The subject is portrayed three-quarter length, seated in an armchair in a black coat with silk knee-breeches. He faces front and points with his left hand to an architect's table, on which rest books and papers. There has, however, been a question mark over whether the portrait is of the architect Robert Adam or of an Ayrshire gentleman.
