Medieval Seal Matrix from Telford Area

Unknown, 1300

This silver medieval seal matrix shows a shrine of the Madonna and child with a cleric in the act of prayer at its base. An inscription around the decorated edge of the seal roughly translates as ‘Seal of Roger of Veiloreave, Clerk’.

The seal was found by a metal detectorist on cultivated land near Wrockwardine, Shropshire. It now joins five other medieval seal matrices in the collection of Shrewsbury Museum.
