Jug: The Corporation and William Hill

Coalport Porcelain Factory, Caughley Porcelain Manufactory, 1796

This is an election jug made in favour of William Hill who successfully won the 1796 Parliamentary Election in Shrewsbury. This was a closely fought election campaign between William and his brother John Hill and was dubbed a 'family contest ... sprung from a pique' and the brothers attempted to buy votes with ale, food and more. Shrewsbury acquired the election jug for John Hill with the help of the Art Fund in 1965.
