Christ Between Saints Paul and Peter

Pietro Lorenzetti, c. 1320

Thought to be part of the predella to an altarpiece, this beautiful golden panel is the earliest work in the Ferens collection by 130 years. A 14th-century Sienese master, Pietro Lorenzetti showed a concern with naturalism and illusionism that was a century ahead of his time. The belt-wrapped scabbard held by Saint Paul, who stands to Christ's right, is depicted with a realism more typical of Renaissance art. This work was acquired with assistance from the Wolfson Foundation.
