This type of bowl, with its pierced cover, is today known to collectors as a chestnut bowl. However, there is some debate about the accuracy of this term, and there is no consensus over the real use of such vessels. What is certain is that such bowls and covers had a matching stand, which is missing in this example. This Derby shape is known in both blue and white and in polychrome decoration. This important piece of porcelain was made at the first Derby factory and has the distinction of being one of the few pieces of porcelain from this factory dated inside the cover.
