Boulogne Sands: Children Shrimping

Philip Wilson Steer, 1891

The picture is a good example of Steer's early experimental period when he was assimilating the methods of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. The influence of Seurat is particularly felt in the way the surfaces are systematically divided into complementary colours, applied with small dabs of the brush.
