A Wooded Landscape with a Cornfield

Jacob van Ruisdael, c. 1655–1660

Ruisdael was the greatest of the Dutch realist landscape painters, and profoundly influenced the development of European landscape painting in the 19th century. He was born at Haarlem and his early work was done in this vicinity. About 1650 he travelled in East Holland and West Germany before settling in Amsterdam around 1655. He was a very prolific artist. The Ferens Art Gallery specialised in Netherlandish painting but had no major 17th century Dutch landscape before this acquisition. This purchase was made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Gallery.
