A Prospect of the City of Derby

Unknown artist, c. 1725

The prospect shows Derby at the height of its prosperity and industrial power with the distinctive Silk Mill at the centre. The Silk Mill dates from 1717 and is regarded as the world's first factory. It had five floors of working machinery and a vast number of workers. The mill soon became a popular stop on the tourist trail and visitors marvelled at its size. The mill now houses Derby's Industrial Museum.
