This picture was painted for Wright's regular patron John Milnes, a Wakefield cotton manufacturer. The scene is Needwood Forest, not far from Derby, which Wright visited when he stayed with his friend Thomas Gisborne. Wright's colleagues admired the sunshine effect in the work.
