Paul Sharits, 1988

American artist Paul Sharits is primarily known as a film-maker. However drawings are essential in understanding the scope and singularity of his artistic work and vision. These two drawings depict the physical qualities of film, each coloured unit representing a single frame of the film, and each second of the film composed of twenty four frames. The drawings allow us to see how Sharits generated some of the optical effects in his films. A line of solid colour illustrates each individual frame as it would appear in sequence in the film. The variety of vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines their duration, and their juxtaposition with the colours that proceeded show us how Sharits visualised the passage of each frame on the filmstrip through the projector. These drawings were presented by the Art Fund through Art Fund International.
