Thomas Joshua Cooper, 1975–1978
Cooper has travelled the world for his art, visiting ‘uncharted’ territories on the boundaries of human civilisation. The landscape of the Midlands has always captured his imagination, prompting a number of return visits. Taken while Cooper was working in Nottingham as a lecturer on Nottingham Trent Polytechnic’s landmark Creative Photography course, these three small photographs capture his poetic vision of the area. The dense, monochrome images transform environmental features into textures, a tree becoming a streak across the mottled grey of a wall, wild flowers a splash of light against a dark backdrop of undergrowth.
