The Weald & Downland Living Museum brings history to life through rescued rural buildings and hands-on heritage experiences in the South Downs.

This open-air museum features over 50 historic buildings, from medieval farmhouses to working watermills, all relocated from across South East England. Every structure has been carefully reconstructed to show how people once lived, worked and built. It’s an immersive way to explore the architecture and everyday life of the region’s past 1,000 years.

Hands-on heritage

Daily demonstrations bring traditional rural skills to life – think milling flour, blacksmithing and heritage crafts. Visitors can explore gardens planted with period-appropriate crops, meet rare-breed animals and enjoy seasonal activities linked to farming and folklore.

Explore and learn

Set in 40 acres of South Downs countryside, it’s a place to slow down and really connect with history. There’s also a café, picnic spots and plenty of green space for wandering.

Why you should go

  • See real historic homes up close

  • Learn traditional skills first-hand

  • A unique slice of rural England
