The Scottish Fisheries Museum
Interactive displays and a nationally significant collection tell the story of Scotland’s fishing industry at this national museum.
Aptly located in the coastal village of Anstruther, where the harbour once processed more fish than any other in Scotland, the Scottish Fisheries Museum is housed in a group of traditional buildings that date back to the 16th and 19th centuries.
Established to capture the skills, customs and heritage of the fishing industry in the face of its decline, the museum showcases personal possessions, equipment, historic photographs and artworks.
Organised around a courtyard where local fisherpeople once cured and sold fish, repaired nets and barked their lines to prevent rot, the museum's displays explore primitive fishing, the herring market, boat building, the future of fishing and more.
Home to a shop, tea room and a changing programme of activities and workshops, the museum is also in command of a 22-strong fleet of boats, two of which still go to sea.
