The McKechnie Institute

Girvan
Free to all

A cultural hub on the West coast of Scotland, The McKechnie Institute boasts both permanent heritage displays and a programme of events and exhibitions.

Built in Scottish Baronial style with Renaissance details, the McKechnie Institute was first opened in 1889 at the behest of local businesspeople Thomas and Robert McKechnie. The institute originally had a library, reading room and ladies room occupying the ground floor, with a billiard room and Librarian's house above.

Girvan heritage

Today, the cultural centre highlights the heritage of Girvan in South Ayrshire, with permanent displays of artefacts including fossils and Bronze Age Cinerary Urns, once used to contain ashes after cremation, dating back to 2,100-1,500 BC. Exhibits explore the history of Ailsa Craig, where granite is quarried for curling stones, and the maritime industry of the area.

Check ahead for a changing programme of exhibitions, events and activities at the institute year-round.
