Telling the diverse story of Manchester through the ages, Manchester Museum explores and celebrates the city’s eclectic history.
Following a major transformation in 2022, Manchester Museum boasts a number of galleries with the museum’s communities at its heart, including the South Asia Gallery. Co-curated with South Asia Gallery Collective and in partnership with the British Museum, the gallery explores the lived experiences and contributions of the South Asian diaspora, particularly in connection to Manchester’s history.
Other spaces include the vast Exhibition Hall, where a lively programme of exhibitions dives into the past, present and future, the Lee Kai Hung Chinese Culture Gallery with a focus on stories of migration, friendship and collaboration between the UK and China, and the Belonging Gallery – led by Alexandra P Alberda, the museum’s Curator of Indigenous Perspectives, this unique gallery reflects on what it means to belong somewhere.
Manchester Museum particularly explores important topics relevant to the city's communities, such as its history of colonialism alongside language, sound, music, dance and more. Other spaces include a dinosaur display, a prayer room, quiet room and therapy room, and the museum’s collection contains a number of intriguing artefacts and stunning works of art. And all of this is housed inside the shell of a spectacular neo-Gothic building in the centre of Manchester.
