Southport's art collections are housed at The Atkinson, a new cultural venue that also covers dance, drama and music.

The Atkinson is a great place to visit if you're looking for a cultural experience in Southport. Whether you're interested in the arts, history, or simply want to have a fun day out with your family, this vibrant arts centre, housed in refurbished 19th century buildings, has a lot to offer.

Browse the galleries

The centre has several galleries showcasing a diverse range of contemporary and historical artworks. Temporary exhibitions sit alongside works from The Atkinson’s own extensive collection, which includes pieces by Elisabeth Frink, Walter Sickert, LS Lowry and Henry Moore.

Explore Ancient Egypt

The Egyptology museum takes visitors on a journey through what life was like in ancient Egypt, care of the Goodison Collection. Artefacts include a decorated coffin lid and the Mummy of Nes-Amun. It also features interactive displays such as X-raying an Ibis mummy and a hieroglyphic jigsaw. Choose an outfit from the dressing up box and take a selfie, or use your phone to take part in a new augmented reality experience, The Ba Bird Tour.

Local history museum

Follow the story of Sefton from prehistoric times to the present day, and find out more about the people who have lived and worked in the area. Interactive displays include sending a digital postcard, finding ships using sonar and matching birds with their song. The Local Legends Tour, brings artefacts to life by scanning the QR codes in the museum with your phone.
