Lynher is a historic Victorian barge offering unique cultural and educational experiences.

Built in 1896 to transport stone and produce along Cornwall’s waterways, Lynher is one of only two surviving Tamar barges. With her distinctive shape and storied past, Lynher offers a rare floating perspective on history, craftsmanship and community engagement.

History and heritage

After decades of service and dereliction, she has been painstakingly restored and now forms part of the National Historic Fleet. Her presence at Exeter Heritage Harbour connects visitors to the region’s long and layered maritime story.

A living exhibit

Lynher isn’t just a relic, she’s a working vessel with a renewed purpose. As part of a wider initiative to revive Exeter’s quayside heritage, Lynher helps bring the past to life through workshops, festivals and public events. She’s a striking sight on the water and a symbol of the city’s commitment to preserving its cultural infrastructure.
