Staircase House is a hands-on historical journey through Stockport's oldest townhouse, complete with Jacobean cage-newel staircase.
Situated in Stockport's historic Market Place, this Grade II* listed mediaeval building is the oldest in Stockport, built in around 1460, the interior was lovingly restored after a devastating fire in 1995.
Audio tour
Visitors can take an audio tour of the house, revealing its full history and illustrating what domestic life was like during the five centuries after it was first built.
The staircase
The most famous example of a Jacobean cage-newel staircase can be found at Staircase House. It is one of only three surviving examples in the country and a remarkable piece of architectural heritage.
Staircase House is one of seven museums in Stockport and offers regular creative workshops for adults.
