The Salisbury Museum
With a National Art Pass you get
Discover half a million years of human achievement in this remarkable place.
Set within a magnificent Grade I listed building in Salisbury’s stunning Cathedral Close, the award-winning Salisbury Museum tells the story of Salisbury and the surrounding landscape – a region of internationally significant archaeological, artistic, and historical importance.
Archaeological treasures that tell extraordinary stories
Step into the Wessex archaeology gallery and you’re walking through time. See the Amesbury Archer – one of Britain’s most significant Bronze Age burials – alongside unique artefacts from Stonehenge and the celebrated Pitt-Rivers collections. These aren’t just objects behind glass; they’re gateways to understanding how people have lived, created, and connected in the landscape for millennia.
Fine art collection
The art collection brings together works by celebrated artists, including Rex Whistler, J.M.W. Turner, and from June 2026, John Constable. Whether you’re drawn to landscape, portraiture, or design, there’s something to capture your imagination.
New galleries, countless discoveries
Salisbury Gallery – From medieval Salisbury to the present day. See the Drainage Collection (everyday treasures from historic sewers), St Christopher (Britain’s oldest surviving medieval giant), and artefacts spanning World War history and the Scout Motor Car.
Potted history of Britain
Explore 6,000 years of ceramics in the magnificent King’s Room. Over 4,000 pieces of English pottery and porcelain – from Wedgwood to locally made crockery – tell the story of craft, trade, and taste.
Natural History
Journey from the Jurassic period to the present through fossils, plant specimens, and taxidermy that reveal the natural world beneath Salisbury’s feet.
Changing exhibitions
Three major and three minor temporary exhibitions are shown each year, carefully curated to complement the permanent collections and bring fresh perspectives and new discoveries.
