Paxton House is an 18th-century Adam country house with Chippendale furniture and a collection of world-class paintings from the National Galleries of Scotland.

Situated on the banks of the River Tweed in Scotland, Paxton House is considered one of the finest examples of 18th-century Palladian architecture in Britain. Designed by the renowned Adam brothers, the grand house was built between 1758 and 1766. Originally intended as a residence to impress a Prussian heiress, it boasts a collection of stunning interiors designed by Robert Adam himself.

Explore the historic house

The house is home to a nationally important collection of Chippendale furniture, alongside pieces by John Trotter, another celebrated 18th-century furniture maker. The walls themselves are adorned with a collection of over 70 paintings on loan from the National Galleries of Scotland. For a touch of social history, the house also displays a collection of original 18th-century costumes, highlighting the fashions of the time.

Outdoor adventure

Extending over 80 acres, the estate features beautiful gardens, woodlands, wildlife trails and riverside walks. Relax on the sprawling lawns, visit the adventure playground, or venture deeper into the estate to discover the charming Victorian boathouse, recently restored and offering boat trips on the River Tweed during the summer months. The Stables Tearoom provides refreshment after all that fresh air.

The Georgian Waterwheel

In 2017, one of the oldest domestic water supply systems in Scotland was rediscovered on the estate. The Paxton waterwheel provided fresh water to the house for centuries. You can see Scotland’s only surviving 18th century domestic waterwheel in action most days from March to October between 1pm-2pm.
