New Lanark World Heritage Site
With a National Art Pass you get
This unique 18th-century mill village and visitors centre is stunningly situated, less than an hour from Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Sitting alongside the picturesque River Clyde, New Lanark was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Outstanding Universal Value in 2001.
New Lanark became a byword for social philanthropy under the management of pioneer and reformer Robert Owen, offering fair wages, free healthcare and the world’s first workplace nursery. Visitors can explore the village’s history, see recreated millworkers’ houses and watch historic working machinery in action. New Lanark also hosts a programme of touring exhibitions throughout the year in the newly developed exhibition gallery.
Yarn produced traditionally on site is available in the gift shop and the café serves home baking and Fair Trade drinks. It’s even possible to stay overnight in a cotton mill, beautifully restored as the New Lanark Mill Hotel.
Set in native woodlands, the site also offers wonderful walks through the Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve to see the famous waterfalls.
