This award-winning local history museum is housed in a fine Grade I listed Georgian town house.
The house retains many original features, including a delightful walled garden. Among the personalities featured are William Cobbett, the author George Sturt and inventor John Henry Knight, ll of whom have connections with the town. There is also a fine collection of paintings by local artists including Stephen Elmer, WH Allen, Harold Falkner and Sir John Verney.
The previously derelict kitchen garden has been developed as an accessible outdoor education garden, while the local studies library is a treasure trove of information on the town, holding maps, census data, parish records, electoral rolls, street directories, newspapers and a photographic archive.
