This medieval moated manor house retains the original features of its history, from the 14th century through to the 1950s.

Over the centuries, squires, sheriffs, MPs and courtiers have all made their mark on Ightham Mote, which is built around a central courtyard.

Its history offers a rich gallery of characters, including an early resident who was sent to the Tower of London for trying to murder his wife by throwing her into a well. Tales of rebellion, scandal and illegitimacy ensued for generations.

From homages to Henry VIII to enormous 17th-century fireplaces, from Victorian luxury to New England style interiors, visitors can chart 700 years of history, personality and taste in one place.

Extensive gardens, woodland and farmland surround the Grade I listed building. It also hosts temporary exhibitions, events and talks.
