There is much to enjoy among the military treasures housed in Green Howards Museum, dedicated to the distinguished Yorkshire Regiment.

The Green Howards Museum in Richmond, tells the story of the Green Howards, a distinguished British infantry regiment. Founded in 1922, the museum boasts an impressive collection spanning more than three centuries of the regiment's history.

Military history

Over 35,000 artefacts bring the Green Howards' story to life. Uniforms, including a Crimean coat (one of only two worldwide), weapons including a First World War German machine gun, and everyday soldier's kit offer a glimpse into the realities of military life. The museum also houses a fascinating collection of artworks and prints depicting battle scenes, and personal items, letters, and diaries that provide a more intimate perspective on the soldiers' experiences.

Exhibitions and events

The Green Howards Museum hosts vibrant exhibitions that delve deeper into specific aspects of the regiment's history or military themes in general. Additionally, the museum organises events throughout the year, offering talks, workshops, and family-friendly activities.

Harrison Medal Room

A particularly noteworthy exhibit is the medal room, showcasing over 4,500 medals, awarded to Green Howards in all the major conflicts of the past two centuries, often donated by family members of the recipients. These include some of the highest military honours, the George Cross and the Victoria Cross. Memorials and displays honour the sacrifices made by Green Howards soldiers throughout history. The museum strives to ensure that the stories of these brave men are not forgotten.
