Dunvegan Castle is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland, with formal gardens and boat tours to the Loch Dunvegan seal colony.
Sitting on a rocky outcrop on the Isle of Skye, this Hebridean stronghold has been occupied by the same family for nearly eight centuries, and has a history full of colour and drama. The massive exterior of the fortress combines six separate buildings of different dates, which were given a unified appearance in the mid 19th century by a ‘romantic restoration’.
Step inside the Castle
The castle houses a collection of clan artefacts that tell the story of the MacLeods and the Highlands. One particularly interesting item is the Fairy Flag, a legendary banner said to bring good luck in battle. The castle is also home to a collection of Jacobite relics, including a waistcoat and lock of hair believed to have belonged to Bonnie Prince Charlie, a key figure in Scottish history.
Adventures on the Loch
Dunvegan Castle’s location offers opportunities to explore the dramatic surroundings of Skye. Boat trips are available to see the local seal colony, a chance to witness the creatures in their natural habitat. For the more adventurous, traditional clinker boats can be chartered for fishing trips or scenic cruises on Loch Dunvegan.
