Established in 1836, it is the district's largest museum, boasting a diverse collection that chronicles Dover's story from the Neolithic era to the present day.
Maritime showstopper
The museum’s star attraction is the world's oldest known seagoing vessel. The Dover Bronze Age Boat Gallery showcases this meticulously preserved boat, dating back to 1,500 BC, gives insight into early maritime technology. The hands-on gallery uses artefacts, models, microscopes and computer interactives to bring the Bronze Age to life.
Local history
Delve into the town’s rich history from Prehistoric times to the 20th century. Explore Anglo-Saxon finds, castle history, medieval development, and learn about Dover's importance in both World Wars. Other exhibits showcase Roman and Medieval maritime life, the development of the Dover harbor, and the evolution of the iconic Channel ferries.
Swimming the channel
The museum houses a collection dedicated to the history of Channel swimming, a daring feat attempted by many over the years. This is enhanced by an extensive online archive chronicling attempts to swim the English Channel since records began in 1875.
Fred the polar bear
Meet Dover’s resident polar bear, affectionately nicknamed Fred. The mounted specimen has been part of the permanent collection for over 100 years and is a beloved mascot for the museum.
