One of the UK's best-preserved medieval castles, Bolton Castle in North Yorkshire has witnessed over 600 years of fascinating history.

A magnificent example of a 14th-century example of a quadrangular castle, Bolton Castle is a captivating blend of grandeur, history, and family heritage. With its well-preserved architecture, engaging events, and stunning surroundings, expect a great day out for the whole family.

A family home

Built by Sir Richard le Scrope, who served as Chancellor to King Richard II, the castle has never been sold and remains in the ownership of the Scrope family to this day. It was intended as a luxurious family home, and has been preserved in excellent condition.

Step back in time

Approximately one third of the rooms are fully intact, with displays showing life as it would have been for the different members of the castle community, from the archers, cooks and monks to Mary, Queen of Scots (who stayed there for six months).

A defence fortress

Bolton Castle was also built with defence in mind, with imposing rectangular towers and defensive features, like machicolations for dropping objects on attackers. It played a role in the English Civil War, suffering some damage during the conflict. Explore the castle and learn about its intriguing history through guided tours, reenactments, events and activities.

Activities for all ages

The castle hosts daily activities including on-site falconry displays, archery demonstrations and wild boar feedings, plus children’s costumes, calligraphy and medieval games.

If it all gets too much, the castle tearoom provides a welcome respite, offering delicious homemade food and beverages.
