One of the few masterpieces of architect Henry Holland to survive intact, Berrington Hall was built in 1778-81 for Thomas Harley, the 5th son of the 3rd Earl of Oxford, and today houses some fine collections.

Those familiar with the name Lancelot Brown ? aka Capability Brown ? will be interested to know that the much-admired landscape designer conceived of Berrington?s gardens and parkland, complete with an artificial 14-acre lake. Set within these grounds is the hall itself, which offers an Ionic portico and interiors characteristic of Holland?s Louis XVI style. Other neo-classical elements include chimney pieces and the sweeping Staircase Hall.

Berrington is home to the Elmar Digby Collection, which features fine examples of French furniture, and a sizeable ceramic collection. Paintings include four large sea battle scenes from the American War of Independence, and the hall also hosts regular costume exhibitions.

Visitors can amble through 456 acres of parkland (and even walk a special Capability Brown route), and enjoy regular events spanning everything from kite festivals to boating on the lake and cider weekends.
