Housed in a 14th century building, Almonry Museum explores the history of 'The Vale of Evesham' from pre-history to the 20th century.
The beautiful timber-framed building, once part of the Benedictine Evesham Abbey, was transformed into a museum in the 1950s, bringing to life the history of the market town of Evesham and the surrounding area. Spread over two floors, the earliest artefacts include prehistoric finds as part of archaeological display that also includes grave goods from the Anglo-Saxon era.
Evesham's industry
The Undercroft, the oldest known part of the building, houses domestic exhibits and artefacts relating to Evesham’s success in market gardening, fruit growing and glove making. These sit alongside tools of other local trades that included thatching, saddlery and blacksmithing.
Almonry garden
The adjoining outdoor space is itself teaming with history, from horticultural items of the past and original Abbey stonework, to a cannon captured at the Battle of Sevastopol during the Crimean War and later given to the town of Evesham by Queen Victoria.
Victorian kitchen
Get immersed in the 19th century via two Victorian reconstructions at the museum, a kitchen on the ground floor is filled with utensils from the era, whilst upstairs, a Victorian classroom is set out and visitors are encouraged to get dressed up and play with the costumes and items on show.
Due to its age the Almonry building is in need of repair and has been on the Heritage At Risk Register for nearly a decade, fundraising is currently underway to help save the historic structure.
