Paloma Contreras Lomas: Disco Inferno
Opening soon at Gasworks: a new commission and the first European solo exhibition by Mexican artist Paloma Contreras Lomas.
For Disco Inferno, Paloma presents an installation unfolding as a mise-en-scène reminiscent of a film set, with room-scale murals portraying her own interpretations of hell. Inspired by so-called Latin American Antigones – figures of moral courage and civil disobedience – and Dante’s Inferno, Paloma reimagines its nine concentric circles through key moments from Mexico’s history, including the 1920 Mexican Revolution, the Dirty War, the impacts of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and the ongoing drug wars.
Through spectres, sound and remains from Mexico’s past and present, Disco Inferno scrutinises how stereotypes, fuelled by mass media and politics alike, shape the myths of a country, and the consequences they continue to produce.
