UK debut for Bangladeshi artist Soma Surovi Jannat about folklore and the climate crisis.
Referencing the Ashmolean’s archives and the endangered Sundarbans mangroves, Surovi addresses the climate crisis through roughly 40 works of art including intricate paintings, a 30-foot scroll, and a live ephemeral drawing completed on the gallery walls.
Part of the Ashmolean NOW series, Soma Surovi Jannat is the first Bangladeshi artist-in-residence at the Ashmolean. Through these imagined landscapes, Surovi critiques the link between natural disasters and social inequality, reflecting on the urgent environmental threats facing Bangladesh.
