Sculptural commission connects local agriculture to architecture.
Displayed within the Yorkshire Sculpture Park Chapel, Time’s Scythe is a site-responsive installation by British artist Nicola Turner that is made from entangled wool and horsehair. The material of the installation connects the building’s 18th-century architecture to the surrounding landscape, as the local grazing sheep provided the material Turner repurposes.
Incorporating traditional Sheffield-made shears, the work references West Yorkshire’s textile heritage and the story of Saint Bartholomew. By weaving together art history and rural labor, Turner investigates our unconscious connections to the environment, using cutting as a metaphor for both the inevitability of death and the possibility of new beginnings.
