A major exhibition by acclaimed artist Angela de la Cruz, bringing together rarely seen sculptures, installations & paintings

Ikon Gallery presents Angela de la Cruz: UPRIGHT, showcasing rarely seen works by the celebrated contemporary artist alongside a new commission created in collaboration with Birmingham Royal Ballet. Guest‑curated by Carolina Grau, the exhibition brings together sculptures, installations and de la Cruz’s iconic “broken” paintings, that explore de la Cruz’s deep concern with the human body, vulnerability and the physical realities of everyday survival.

Highlights include Still Life with Table (2000), a canvas draped over collapsed domestic furniture, Limp (Brown) (2000), and Bloated III (Blue) (2012), a hammered metal box evoking transformation between states. At the centre sits Transfer (White) with armchair (2011), reflecting the artist’s long recovery after her stroke in 2005. The exhibition explores resilience, adaptation and the struggle to remain upright—with poignancy, humour and uncompromising physicality.
