Experience the first major exhibition dedicated to Joseph Wright of Derby’s famed ‘candlelight’ paintings.
The exhibition brings together over 20 works of art, including paintings, mezzotints, works on paper and objects, to examine Joseph Wright of Derby’s artistic practice and the wider context of scientific and artistic development in which he worked.
His compositions, often depicting figures gathered around sculptures, scientific instruments, animals and natural specimens, reveal his interest in the act of looking and the moral questions it raises. The exhibition also reconsiders Wright’s reputation as a figure of the Enlightenment. While admired for his dramatic treatment of light and shadow, his works also address darker themes of death, melancholy, scepticism and the sublime.
