Boris Mikhailov’s retrospective captures Ukraine since the 1960s with humour, tragedy and insight
Boris Mikhailov has spent more than 50 years exploring Ukraine’s social and political transformations through photography, conceptual work, performance and painting. Combining humour, mischief and tragedy, he challenges documentary conventions and perceptions of reality.
Ukrainian Diary brings together over twenty of his most significant series, spanning the collapse of the Soviet Union to contemporary times. The images create moving, often provocative narratives of everyday life, power and resistance, revealing the complexities of Ukrainian society. This UK retrospective offers a rare chance to experience one of Eastern Europe’s most influential contemporary artists in depth.
