An intimate and sprawling chronicle of artistic and rural life in the mid-20th century.

Between the world wars, Oakshott Hangers in Hampshire was a lively retreat where artists, poets, architects and locals gathered. This exhibition showcases a selection of images chosen from over 1,000 original negatives from the Museum’s archive, taken mainly by photographer Winifred Joseph at the artistic retreat and home of Dr Harry Roberts, a doctor hailing from London’s East End.

Joseph’s photographs document this unique circle – capturing tender domestic scenes, spirited children, hardworking horses and playful pets alongside portraits of Joseph's close group of friends.
