16 meticulously preserved photo albums document a rural world alive with friendship and creativity.
Between the world wars, Oakshott Hangers in Hampshire was a lively retreat where artists, poets, architects and locals gathered. This exhibition showcases over 1,000 original negatives from the Museum’s archive, taken mainly by photographer Winifred Joseph at the artistic retreat and home of Dr Harry Roberts, a doctor hailing from London’s East End.
Joseph’s photographs document this unique circle – capturing tender domestic scenes, spirited children, hardworking horses and playful pets alongside portraits of figures such as Geoffrey Lupton, poet Edward Thomas and artist Flora Twort.
