This new body of work explores the ever-changing Lakeland landscape.
The work is abstract, painted from memory and includes familiar shapes; field patterns on the fellside, ancient gate stoops weathered by the elements, a hog hole in a wall, the curve of a line of trees battered by storms, slabs of granite left abandoned from the last ice age. With these as my inspiration I build up layers of paint in an intuitive way; scraping, sanding, scouring to reveal hidden details – responding to the marks themselves, constantly looking to see what emerges – contrasts – relationships between colour and form. So that the final work, whilst perhaps not immediately recognisable, retains a sense of place and time.
